Folic acid supplementation increases maternal folate status. A low folate status in the mother increases the risk of neural tube abnormalities in the developing fetus. The beneficial effect is achieved in women of childbearing by consuming 400 µg of folic acid per day, at least one month before conception and up to three months after conception.
